ADVISORY BOARD

  • She/HEr

Born in Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico, and later raised in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. In 2021 she moved from Boston to New Hampshire. It was through watching Rocket Power on Nickelodeon en Español that Ruth first learned and became interested in outdoor recreation in the mountains & oceans as a means of joy, and the first time she saw Latine characters engaging in Deportes Extremos. It wasn’t until she moved to Maine on a scholarship that she had more access available to experience the outdoors. Nature became a space for self-reflection and growth as she navigated a new culture. In her 12 years of living in New England, Ruth has advocated for underrepresented groups to access the outdoors in her local community, her social media platforms and as a board member of Summits in Solidarity. During the day, she works as an Operations Engineer for a Data Analysis team. She has continued to explore the mountains and oceans of the area and their communities (along her dog Cosmo) through rock climbing, hiking, mountain running, skiing and surfing. The ocean has always had special meaning for Ruth as it connects her to her inner child and crucial memories of joy. .

Desi joins MWS to amplify the voices of other brave women working to close the gap between their work life and what makes them feel alive. Desiree is passionate about being in collaboration with creators and entrepreneurs who are reimagining how the future works.

After lockdown, Desi found winter surfing with MWS as a way to get out the house and reinvigorate her entire being. Fast forward to the end of 2022 and she went from being a beginner winter surfer here in Maine to being a sponsored surfer at Waikiki beach with some of the best and brightest in the sport. Desi wasn't sponsored because she was the best. She simply shared her story of being a bad ass black woman surfing for the first time at age 37.
